Department of General Surgery at Government Vellore Medical College and Hospital was instituted in the Year 2005.It is headed by a professor and four Associate professors, surgical registrar and 12 Assistant Professors. It also has senior and junior residents.
Four Surgical Units Constitute the Department Of Surgery and out Patient services are given on all Days. Major and Minor Surgical Procedures are conducted. Emergency Surgery and inpatient services including Elective and Trauma Care Services are given Surgical intensive care Ward, septic ward, burns ward and chief ministers comprehensive health insurance scheme ward (ward 500) are manned by surgical units.
The Department Trains Undergraduate Students (MBBS) and Nursing and Paramedical Students.
House Surgeons after completion of the Degree Course get trained in the basic Surgical Clinical Skills by the Department.
Nursing students are given training theoretically and clinically.
One year Diploma in operation theatre technician paramedical course conducted by the department.
Specialty clinic in urology is conducted twice a week and outpatient and inpatient services are given
Endoscopy clinic functions five days a week.

2 Unit All Tuesdays alternate Saturdays
3 Unit All Wednesdays alternate Mondays
4 Unit All Thursdays alternate Saturdays
Sundays on rotation for all four units
Bed Strength of Department - 40 Beds X 4 Units = 160 Beds
Average O.P Strength - 3000 per Month
Average Inpatient - 300 per Month
