The historic town of Vellore added another feather when government Vellore medical college hospital was started in Vellore, Adukamparai and Vellore 11.
 
The department of Medicine was started with one professor and four associate professors
Functioning as four medical units, includes Geriatrist and Diabetologist and allied specialties including Cardiology, Neurology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Oncology and Thoracic medicine.
 
The department is also having a full fledged library with national and international journals.
 
Total No. of Bed strength in the Medical Department : 160
 
The department is having a well equipped IMCU &ICCU with bed strength of twenty four.
 
A sophisticated ward has been exclusively opened for the beneficiaries  under the Chief Ministers Comprehensive  Health Scheme ( 500 Ward).

A full fledged ART Centre, is functioning under the department of Medicine, with Professor of Medicine as the nodal officer.
 
A Master Health Check up Unit is functioning every day under the department of Medicine.
 
 
 
TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
 
 
 
  1. Final MBBS  (III).,  -  Both Theory and clinical classes.
  2. II MBBS -  Both Theory and Clinical classes
  3. Diploma in Nursing – Theory Classes
  4. Diploma in Emergency care Technicians – Theory and practical classes.
 
 
 
Every Tuesday Journal club is conducted with participation of all teaching faculties.
 
Every Second Saturday  once in a month a CME Programme is conducted with the participation of students and teaching faculty.
 
Every First Saturday, Clinical meeting is conducted with discussion of interesting clinical cases.
 
The department of Medicine conducted a Clinical medal examination for the undergraduate  exam going students for the current year (2012).
 
Ms. Nithya, Final year student qualified for the Medal, based on the performance in the screening tet  and the clinical examination
