                                                                 The activities of the   Department of Community Medicine  commenced from the same year when the Government Vellore Medical College became functional during 2005. The Department has been established in one portion of the second floor of the Faculty Block. Spacious staff rooms and office rooms are available along with the following :

While  routine demonstrations for the MBBS block posting students are  conducted in the department itself, lectures are delivered for the  theory classes in the separate lecture hall in the campus .Our teaching programme  covers virtually every year of MBBS  students , starting from I MBBS to CRRI ‘s  .
To  make  students participate in the process of learning, We are using various   teaching methods like   Lectures/Tutorials/Demonsration /Seminar /Group discussion /Debate /Role play/CME/Integrated teaching  .Also health education /awareness campaigns  are  arranged every now and then.
As per MCI regulations  following  Primary Health Centers& Urban Health Center  have been adopted  & attached with the department of community medicine  for outreach activities  and  for rural & urban health training to the students  & CRRI’s (Vellore HUD)

CRRI’s are posted in the department  for a period of  8 weeks during their internship.  To have practical knowledge about our Health Care Delivery System in Public Sector & National Health programmes  , they are posted in    PHCs & UHC and also in National Health Programmes like RNTCP (Thoracic medicine ) ,NACP( ART Clinic ) .
 
The Integrated Disease Surveillance Project unit(IDSP) has been established in the department and a Data Entry Operator has been posted for collection and reporting of diseases covered under IDSP.
                         One Health Inspector has been diverted to the department from Government Primary Health Centre, Kaniyambadi in Vellore District. He has been entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring sanitation and hygiene in the campus.
Compliance surveys for the routine Mass Drug Administration for Lymphatic Filariasis is being conducted by the department and reports submitted to the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.
           Student teams headed by the faculty of the Department of Community Medicine coordinated with the District Health Authorities for dengue control activities during October to December

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS:
             Two scientific papers have been sent for publication in the National Journals during the year 2012:

                  PRIZES AND AWARDS WON:
                      Thiru M.Ravichandran  Health Inspector attached to the department was felicitated with the Chief Ministers award for excellence in government service during the year 2012.  He received the award from the District Collector on 26th January 2013.
 
PRIZES AND AWARDS CONSTITUTED BY THE DEPARTMENT :
In commemoration  with the World Mosquito Day on 20th August 2012 the following competitions were organized by the department:
 
  1. Essay Writing Contest for MBBS students
  2. Quiz Competitons for MBBS students
  3. Quiz Competitons for DMLT students.
The winners were awarded First Second and Third prizes
 
     RECENT    CMEs, WORKSHOPS/CONFERENCES CONDUCTED BY THE DEPARTMENT:
January 2012:  Awareness Campaign on Communicable Diseases and Prevention
                          was organised  for all the shop owners  and vendors arround the
                          hospital campus. Orientation was provided for coordinating with
                          hospital authorities  for maintaining sanitation and hygiene, house
                          fly and mosquito control.
 

 
February 2012:  Sensitization Programme was conducted for the Hospital Workers
                            and Sanitary Workers of the Medical College and Hospital during
                            February 2012. Orientation was provided on methods for
                            management and disposal of bio-medical waste, fly and mosquito
                            control, personal protection etc.
 

 
 
 
September 2012:  Workshop on the “Surgical and Non –Surgical interventions of
                               Human Lymphatic Filariasis” was organized by the department.
                               In this occasion prizes were also awarded to MBBS and DMLT
                               students who won the Essay Writing and Quiz contests conducted
